1939-1940 Recording King M by Regal with Original Case
1939-1940 Recording King M by Regal with Original Case
Recording King M-5 archtop. Likely Crafted at Regal for Montgomery Ward. I had originally assumed this was built by Gibson as they produced 90% of the Recording King high end pieces. I have since found an identical piece and that the owner and I feel they were probably built by Regal. The silkscreen logo, pickguard and tuners are more closely aligned with Regal features. The closest model we can find is the Model M by Regal or the M-5 which were supposed to have all been built in the Gibson factory. The Recording King brand (and a host of others) were utilized by Gibson to produce finely crafted instruments to keep the company solvent during the lean Pre-War years.
The M-5 was the top-of-the-line Recording King model, essentially designed to exist at the same tier as Gibson's L-5, boasting premium appointments including zipper binding, a bound tortoise pickguard, and pearl shell inlay on the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Tone woods include; a carved spruce top, figured laminate maple back and rims, and a mahogany neck, with a 16 1/4" lower bout width and 24 3/4" scale length. The depth was also 4" providing a deeper low end. The M-5 was introduced in 1936 and from 1938-1940 featured a 5-piece neck. This piece has no serial number, but the tuner buttons are Catalin Bakelite and the neck is one piece mahogany, which more aligns with the late 1930s Regal pieces.

This special guitar has custom inlays that we have never seen before. If also features a Brazilian Rosewood and Flamed Maple design on the headstock with covered open back Grover tuners. The guitar is in excellent condition with little or no checking with the original circular felt pad under the tortoise guard. The guitar came in its original upgrade chipboard case. A pleasure visually and it plays wonderfully.
